Q1: Is it something special that inspired you to start street photography?
       A existat un moment special care a favorizat pasiunea pentru fotografia de stradă?

I can’t say that was special event in my life that make me to become a street photographer. For me it’s was development from being a photographer.
I had a strong interest in photography about 20 years ago. I studied b&w film photography and art in Tel Aviv. In those years I felt that photography is a great media to express myself. I was making a kind of stage photography, portraits, self-portraits and documentary. The “street” came a few years later.
I discovered that street photography is the most interesting and challenging way for expressing and bringing my view to the world. And also the most unique way to make a statement about society and city life.
In the beginning I was inspired by few photographers. The work of Alex Levac (Israeli photographer) had a strong impact on me and it spurred me to go into this kind of photography. Also photographers like Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Walker Evans. In the last years I get more inspiration from Martin Parr and Alex Webb and from friends and images I meet every day in the web.

Nu pot spune că a existat un moment special în viața mea, care să mă determine să abordez fotografia de stradă. Pentru mine reprezintă o nouă etapă de dezvoltare în a fi fotograf. Am fost foarte mult interesat de fotografie acum 20 de ani, când am studiat fotografia în alb și negru pe film în Tel Aviv. În acei ani am simțit că fotografia reprezintă un mediu foarte bun prin intermediul căruia să mă exprim. Făceam fotografii regizate, portrete, autoportrete și fotografie documentară. Fotografia de stradă a sosit în viața mea câțiva ani mai târziu.
Am descoperit că fotografia de stradă este cel mai interesant și provocator mod de a mă exprima și de a-mi exprima viziunea asupra lumii. De asemenea, un mod unic de a face o analiză a societății și a vieții în societate. Lucrările lui Alex Levac (fotograf israelian) au avut un impact puternic asupra mea și m-au ghidat în acest gen de fotografie. De asemenea, am fost inspirat de fotografi ca Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand și Walker Evans, iar în ultimii ani am fost din ce în ce mai mult inspirat de Martin Parr si Alex Webb, precum și de prieteni fotografi, ale căror imagini le descopăr zilnic pe internet.

Q2: Do you have some special place where you felt that you can stay all day long, to capture the moments of the street?
        Ai un loc anume care să te facă să dorești să stai acolo la fotografiat, chiar și o zi intreagă?

For me it’s not easy task to be all day in the street looking for the right moment. It’s very difficult and sometimes can be exhausting and frustrating… I usually go out for shooting for 2-3 hours usually in the afternoon when the light is not too strong… The places I shoot often are at the sea shore or at the Carmel market place in Tel Aviv.
In special events I take the whole day for photography. Especially Religious Events in Jerusalem like Jewish or Christians holidays. Also when there are events like “pride day” …

Pentru mine este destul de dificil să stau o zi întreagă pe stradă așteptând momentul potrivit pentru o fotografie… De obicei ies la fotografiat pentru 2- 3 ore, după amiaza, când lumina nu este atât de puternică… Merg de obicei să fotografiez în piața Carmel în Tel Aviv.
În cazul evenimentelor speciale stau o zi întreagă la fotografiat, în special sărbătorile religioase din Ierusalim, respectiv sărbătorile iudaice și creștine, sau în cazul evenimentelor de genul “pride day”…

Q3: What is the distance you comfortable keep towards your subjects when you are taking street photos
         La ce distanță față de subiecții pe care îi fotografiezi te situezi în mod confortabil?

I usually take my street photos from very close range, using wide angle lenses … I use 24mm lenses and sometimes 28mm, depend also in the camera I ‘m using… and in special occasions like when there is crowded, I use 20mm lenses.

De obicei stau foarte aproape de oameni folosind un obiectiv larg…folosesc obiectivul de 24 mm și uneori de 28 mm, în funcție și de aparatul pe care îl folosesc…iar în ocaziile speciale, când este foarte aglomerat, folosesc obiectivul de 20mm.

 

Q4: Did you work for a specific project in street photography? If yes, did you publish or made a printed exhibition with it?
         Ai lucrat la un proiect anume în fotografia de stradă? Daca da, l-ai publicat sau l-ai expus în vreo expoziție sau album printat?

There are few places that I usually go for shooting and few subjects that I have interest in.
I usually take photos at the Tel Aviv beach and I have a series of photos from this place…
Another place which I often go for shooting is in Mea Shearim Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Jerusalem. There is also a theme that always interests me is animal and animal images in the city. This series of photos was published in the San Francisco Street Festival. All this series can be seen in my page in Flickr.

Sunt destul de puține locuri unde mă duc în mod obișnuit să fotografiez, și destul de puține subiecte care să mă intereseze. De obicei merg pe plaja din Tel Aviv să fotografiez, și am o serie de fotografii de acolo… Un alt loc unde merg des să fotografiez este cartierul Mea Shearim din Ierusalim. Un alt subiect care mă interesează mereu sunt animalele și imaginile cu animalele din mediul citadin. O serie de acest gen a fost printată și expusă la Festivalul de Stradă din San Francisco. Toate aceste serii menționate pot fi văzute pe pagina mea de Flickr.

Q5: There is a story that you remember behind one of your street photographs?
         Există o poveste anume pe care ți-o aduci aminte, de când ai fotografiat-o?

I like the photo below and the story behind it… The photo shows two girls dressed provocatively crossing the street. The scene was taken in Purim (which is Jewish holiday that by tradition people wearing costumes). The truth behind this scene is that these two beautiful girls are two men dressed up as women. This image illustrates very well the essence of street photography. The story of what happened in reality and the story of what appears to be are two different stories…

Îmi place în mod special fotografia de mai jos și povestea din spatele ei. Fotografia prezintă două fete îmbrăcate provocator, care traversează strada. Scena a fost surprinsă în timpul Sărbătorii Purim, o sărbătoare evreiască în timpul căreia este o tradiție să fii costumat. Adevărul este că cele două fete frumoase sunt de fapt doi bărbați, deghizați în femei. Aceasta imagine dovedește în fapt esența fotografiei de stradă. Povestea a ceea ce se întâmplă în realitate este foarte diferită de povestea ce pare să fie surprinsă în imagine…
